Well here goes – a match report from a Mum’s perspective (short, probably not very technical, certainly no YouTube, but hopefully a reasonable reflection of the day)…

Round 12 and the U11 Knights were up against Riversdale.  The pitch was dry (no extra washing today), and the grass and camber were, well, varied.  It was a stunning morning and the boys were out in all their glory.  Ari was missing with an injury that hopefully won’t keep him away for too many weeks and, still without Karan, we were down to 1 on the bench.

The game started with Ben Irvine and Ben 1029, and Michael, Felix, John, Adrian and Aussie filling up midfield, and Zac, Luke, and Adam in defence.  Filip as always was ready in goal, and James started out on the bench.

The boys were smiling and feeling confident and the attack started out fast.  Early on there was a lovely goal from Michael coming up on the right off a free kick.  We had lots of corners at the start, but none of them went in.  As the game progressed, Riversdale became more confident with some serious attacks on our goal – yet again, Filip proved his value between the nets.  The boys in defence, now joined by James, were having to play hard to keep the opposition at bay, as they cleared the ball up to midfield.  Our midfielders passed the ball on to the front line, but the game was full of near misses.  Although Riversdale’s goalie had to work a few times, the net proved elusive from both near and far away.

By this stage the early-morning coffee had worn off, frustration (boys and supporters) was starting to show, and the half time score was 1-0.  The sun was still shining though.

Second half and surely the ball would find the net this time around.  But, it was more of the same.  John, Aussie, Adrian, Michael and Felix would move the ball up the field, with solid drives following from Ben and Ben, but still no goals.  Riversdale really had built their confidence now, and Filip and the boys in defence were working prodigiously after multiple attacks from the opposition.   Mums (at least this one) were checking their watches – whistle must be due to blow soon – was it a 25 or 20 minute half…

Eventually, a ball got through our tiring defence, and the scores were even – with only a couple of minutes to go…

It didn’t get better – the Knights couldn’t recover in the last couple of minutes and we had to do with 1 point this week.  We had two very quiet boys in our car on the way home…

So, Knights, it may have been a bit of a disappointment, but it’s something to work on in training, with time to focus the effort on the next, and challenging round – Eastern Lions, but back at Larpent.

Go KNIGHTS!!!
